At Oxford Instruments Plasma Technology, we provide tools for the engineering of micro- and nano-structures, with customers using our process solutions to research and produce materials and semiconductors vital for everything from medical devices and diagnostics, to electric cars and quantum computers.


We are currentaly recruiting for an expeirenced Desktop and Technical Engineer for a permanent role based in Bristol. You will be responsible for troubleshooting hardware/software problems to a second/third line level as notified by the users and a range of problems including equipment malfunction, software bugs or system errors. Also giving ad hoc support to users on the operation and use of the various standard software packages. Installing new software and new releases of software. Checking PC’s and associated hardware on a regular basis. Installing new equipment and/or relocating existing personal computers and peripherals. Ensureing that user is familiar with the equipment operating procedures by giving instructions when necessary.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage day to day performance of less experienced team members, training, coaching and supporting with their learning and development.
  • Provides effective interface between users and service providers.
  • Installs and commissions desktop systems and their routine upgrades.
  • Initiates the procedure for handling detected incidents.
  • Carries out support activities with respect to problem management process.
  • Monitors application systems or modules for which they are responsible by regular scrutiny of reports from the applications software, systems software or service delivery staff.
  • Identifies potential exposures to application systems critical to the continuity of the Oxford Instruments' business e.g. single points of failure, lack of effective countermeasures or lack of tested, up-to-date recovery plans.
  • Monitors stock levels of critical IT related office supplies ensuring adequate levels are maintained to sustain continual service. Liaising with standard suppliers to maintain relationship and pricing.
  • Undertakes small scale IT projects to deliver discrete packages of work, including but not limited to new product rollouts, upgrades, decommissioning and office moves.
  • Responsibility for building, maintain and supporting mobile devices to Oxford Instruments defined guidelines.
  • Ownership for the routine maintenance tasks as defined in the Office schedule for Daily, Weekly, monthly and Quarterly checks. Includes definition, amendment and retirement of checks as appropriate.


Education / Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science/engineering or equivalent (desired)
  • Preferably have the relevant Desktop or IT Technical certification (desired)
  • Three years’ experience in the use and support of PC applications (desired)


Professional Skills/ Abilities:

  • Support Knowledge to Second/Third line level.
  • Understands IT guidelines & policies and able to assist the impact of new IT technologies (hardware & software).
  • General knowledge of IT system and network protocols and processes
  • General knowledge of network devices (i.e. routers, switches, concentrators, adapters, etc.)
  • Good knowledge of Service Desk solution (KACE), Windows, Office 365 and Network environment,
  • Good knowledge of Anti-Virus system (Sophos), Backup Software (Backup Exec, Veeam) and VMWare
