Quantum Technologies Market Specialist

Reports to:


Head of Strategic R & D Markets

Key relationships:


Product Managers and the Applications Team, Director Strategic Business Development, Service Director




Key Responsibilities


  1. Market & Strategy
  • Contribute to the market roadmap and understanding of device and process in the following markets:
      1. Quantum applications : Quantum Computing, Quantum Information, Quantum Sensing;
      2. Quantum platforms & processes: mostly SC circuits, diamond qubits, PICs, hybrid;
    1. Explore opportunities in Quantum platforms & identify key players: trapped ions, cold atoms, QDs, topological qubits
    2. Conference participation, talks, networking and intelligence
    3. Technology assessment: process and hardware,
    4. IP and patent opportunities: identify process, hardware etc technology including blocking patents, performance patents etc
    5. Distinctive competence; competitive landscape.
    6. Process know how to be developed:
      1. Deposition: ALD, PECVD, ICPCVD
      2. Etch: ALE, Physical etch, Chemical etch


  1. Business, Planning and Programs:
      • Share Jobs to be Done and Voice of the Customer back into the Product Management and Applications team
      • Own and add to the OIPT market intelligence resource of Quantum ecosytem
        • Source existing institutes & companies involved in Quantum
        • Identify key contacts
        • Identify their technology (SC, diamond…) & key research topics
        • Build competitive landscape
        • Identify business priorities & opportunities
        • Key investments and funding announcements
        • Further develop this resource


  1. Global partnerships & Marketing  


  • Build collaborative relationships with customers.  Lead existing strategic collaborations in Quantum
  • Be the market and technology expert to support Sales teams in meetings in the for strategic accounts
  • Write technical articles like blogs and white papers to support marketing campaigns.
  • Technical consult for marketing communication teams: Reviewing drafts and ensuring they are technically accurate and reflect the market situation.

Indicative Performance Measures

Key Deliverables:


  • Growth of the Quantum market
  • Utilisation of open tools
  • VOC and JTBD reports: process and HW roadmap input by target application
  • Customer visit reports
  • Market intelligence reports: Eco System, Customer Intelligence, Competitor Intelligence, Technology Assessment
  • Engagement of the Quantum ecosystem through marketing and direct business development


Person Specification – Essential requirements unless stated



Education / Qualifications:


  • A degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or Electronics from a University recognised for the high quality of its technical degrees. A post graduate qualification is a preferred.
  • PhD with some postdoctoral experience would be an ideal background for success in this role.


Professional Skills/ Abilities:


  • Experience in quantum device fabrication, characterization
  • Experience in standard semiconductor and thin film processing
  • Track record of conference presentations and collaborative project work

  • Team player who makes the best use of the contributions that can be made by others, with the ability to work constructively with others
  • Focused on understanding customers challenges and translating this within OIPT

  • Highly innovative and good lateral thinking skills for identifying opportunities for technology development applications
  • Good diagnostic skills and problem solving abilities. Positive and enthusiastic attitude to technical challenges, and flexibility to cope effectively with changes to specifications or priorities
  • Excellent written and oral communication, with the ability to articulate, present and report on technical or complex issues clearly and succinctly
  • A passion for our industry and the positive impact we can have on our customers’ research and/or products.
